IMPROVE YOUR SIGHT SINGING

Are you one of the many people who enjoy singing but would like to be able to sight sing with greater confidence?
Or are you wanting to acquire some technique and confidence in relation to the sight singing elements of the aural tests?
Or do you lack confidence in sight reading on your instrument and therefore would benefit from taking a vocal approach to reading and hearing the sound of the music in your head before playing it?

MUSIC COMPOSITION DAY

Are you taking 'A' level or GCSE music and wondering how to deal with the composition element?
Or do you simply enjoy composing and want to learn more about how to tackle it?
Or are you someone who can improvise ideas which you then struggle to write down?

This is going to be a very practical day that will begin with how to structure a composition so that it hangs together with strong external and internal structure. We will then consider the key guiding principles in relation to melody writing, phrase shape and phrase balance, which will also encompass our dealings with rhythm. The day will move on to cover a proper understanding of harmony - which chords to use and how to use them. From there we will go on to consider use of texture and how to write for instruments and voices. Then we will think about how to polish a composition with dynamics, phrasing, use of tempo and other expressive issues. We will also make time to learn how to notate improvised musical ideas.

WORKSHOP DAY FOR PIANISTS

This is a day for pianists who have reached a minimum standard of grade 6, though pianists of any level of ability are very welcome as observers. Each performer participant will be invited to play a work of his or her choice, following which there will be feedback on technical, expressive and stylistic issues, including individual written comments to take away. The feedback will then be used to launch group discussion and reflection on matters that are of interest to all pianists. The day will take place at the 'Music Matters' Studio in Wombwell and participants will perform on a superb Steingraeber Phoenix 232 grand piano, which was built in 2011.
