What You Will Learn

Master the essential foundations of tonal harmony with the Basic Harmony course.

Basic Harmony is a comprehensive online course that takes you from the very foundations of tonal music to the practical skills needed to harmonise melodies, write chord progressions, and apply harmony in real music-making. Starting with pre-1600 modal systems, you’ll trace the development of major and minor scales, explore intervals, triads, cadences, voice leading, and much more. Using proven tools like the Circle of Fifths, Roman numerals, figured bass, and lead sheet notation, you’ll gain hands-on skills you can immediately apply to composition, arranging, improvisation, and analysis. This isn’t just theory — it’s a practical, step-by-step toolkit that makes harmony clear, accessible, and rewarding. During the Basic Harmony course we'll cover...

  • Historical Foundations - What is Harmony? Why does it matter? How did tonality develop?
  • Diatonic Triads and Four-Part Harmony - How are chords built? How do inversions work? How do we harmonise melodies?
  • Voice Leading and Part-Writing - Why is spacing important? How do parallel intervals affect harmony? How do we write for voices and keyboard?
  • Cadences and Chord Progressions - What makes a cadence work? How do progressions create movement? How do major and minor keys differ?
  • Melody Harmonisation and Composition - How do we harmonise a melody? How do we compose a melody from chords? How do decorative notes enhance music?

The videos and classes delve into areas not covered by the rest of the online music instructors, focusing on theory and quality instead of how to become rich and famous. If your goal is to improve your music and musicianship, I'd be hard pressed to recommend anything better.

Who Is This Course For?

Serious students who want to hear, write, and understand harmony.

Ever wondered why some chord progressions just sound right, while others fall flat, or why some melodies sound instantly complete when harmonised and others don’t? This course is for musicians, composers, songwriters, and music students who want to go beyond surface-level theory and truly understand the inner workings of harmony. It’s ideal for those who want to understand not just what chords and scales are, but why they work the way they do, and how to apply that knowledge to real musical situations including analysis, composition, arranging, and performance. With structured techniques and key insights, this course gives you the most effective path to mastering tonal harmony, the approach serious students have been searching for.

Do any of these sound familiar?

"I can play music, but I don’t understand why certain chord progressions just work..."

"I’ve tried writing my own music, but my melodies feel flat because I don’t know how to harmonise them effectively..."

"I can read music and play chords, but I don’t know how to write four-part harmony that actually sounds professional…"

"I want to write or arrange music that sounds coherent and professional, but I don’t know how to get started..."

"I’ve seen Roman numerals and figured bass before, but no one has explained how to apply them practically in modern composition and analysis…"

At last!!! You are the best teacher I have experienced. I had a great deal of difficulties, understanding, but your way of teaching is like guiding me to walk step by step without stumbling on my face. Your way showed me that I can and am able to understand music, in spite of my fear. Thank you very much for your attribution, to those frightened students. Bless you.

You have taught me an incredible amount. You are the teacher that actually sparked my interest in learning how to compose orchestral/"classical" music. And that is because you make it so easily understandable. Also you take time to refresh fundamental steps in order for the videos to make sense, not assuming the watcher already knows them. Thank you for all you have done. Words can not describe how big of an impact you are on so many peoples lives. From the people learning directly from your videos, to the people those people go on to teach, and furthermore to the listeners listening to the music created as a result.

Hi, I’m Gareth and I'm passionate about developing ‘the all round musician’.

Over 35 years of music examining with ABRSM, work with the BBC on Radio and TV, experience on the international concert platform, as a published composer and arranger, have brought rich resources to the 40 years of teaching in which I've engaged.

Scholarships at The Royal College of Music, Oxford University and St. Paul’s Cathedral gave me fantastic opportunities to learn from the best musicians, scholars and teachers. Working as Director of Music at Queen Elizabeth Grammar School then provided a wonderful opportunity to develop my teaching skills.

Teaching individuals and groups of all ages, and at all stages of development have refined a teaching approach that I hope is fun and engaging, and focused on explaining things clearly and logically. And that is what these courses are all about - understanding the basic principles with clarity, then going deeper, applying them to your musical life and liberating yourself as a musician.

It’s a rich and amazing journey, and I can’t wait for you to join me today!

A Letter from Gareth Green
MA (Oxon), MA (Leeds), FRCO(CHM), FLCM, ARCM

When I first began my journey as an organist, I quickly discovered something: the ability to improvise was not optional — it was essential. I was expected to fill space during the liturgy and to respond musically in the moment. But my early attempts at improvisation felt clumsy and unsatisfying. Why? Because I didn’t yet understand harmony in any real depth.

That realisation marked a turning point for me.

I began analysing the hymns, psalms, and anthems I was accompanying, trying to decode what made them sound coherent and expressive. It helped, but I still wasn’t happy. It wasn’t until I undertook a serious, structured study of harmony that my improvisation — and indeed all aspects of my musicianship — began to improve dramatically.

Since then, harmony has become a lifelong passion and a central part of my teaching for over 40 years.

That’s why we created this comprehensive online course in harmony here at Music Matters. It brings together everything I’ve learned — not only as a performer, composer and improviser, but as a teacher working with students at every level, from beginners to advanced. The course distils this experience into a clear, step-by-step curriculum focused on what really matters: the practical essentials of harmony.

We begin with the historical foundations — the modes that pre-date the Baroque — and follow the development of major and minor tonality. From there, we explore the Circle of Fifths, intervals, scales, chords, and cadences. We cover diatonic triads in both major and minor keys using Roman numeral analysis and lead sheet symbols, and show you how to build four-part harmony — using correct spacing, avoiding parallel fifths and octaves, and working within vocal ranges.

You’ll learn how to:

  • Harmonise melodies and bass lines

  • Compose melodies from chord progressions

  • Use passing notes, auxiliary notes, anticipatory notes, and other decorative devices

  • Understand and apply cadences in both major and minor keys

  • Navigate voice leading, inversions, and figured bass

And, crucially, we always tie this back to practical music-making — whether you’re arranging, composing, improvising, or simply trying to understand what makes the music you love work. This is why we’ve also produced an ebook, which summarises the key points and also offers examples to illustrate each point.

This is not a dry academic exercise. It’s a living, breathing toolkit for musicians.

Whether you’re a performing musician, or aspiring composer — or simply someone who wants to understand harmony properly — this course is designed to give you the foundation you need, taught in a way that is clear, structured, and musically useful.

In essence, this course is everything I wish I’d had when I first sat at the organ bench, trying to make musical sense out of thin air. It’s the result of a lifetime of study, performance, and teaching — and it’s now here for you.

If you’re ready to transform your understanding of music — and unlock the creative freedom that comes with real harmonic fluency — I warmly invite you to join us. I look forward to seeing you inside the course.
